NDAA President's Letter 2017

Greetings my fellow NDAA Members,

In a month from now, on December 7th & 8th, our NDAA will be conducting our 2nd Annual Conference in Fargo, ND (see attached flyer). My hope is that you are making plans to partake in this worthwhile event (you can register online or by mail)! Encourage others to attend as well!

I have had the honor and privilege of being your President in this inaugural year of 2016-17. Although we are a young organization, adopting our bylaws in September 2016, we have already made a difference for our membership and the vital appraisal industry in ND.  Here are a few of our highlights:

  • In December 2016, we hosted a successful 1st Annual Conference in Bismarck, ND, providing CE classes for NDAA members and the appraisal industry.

  • Committees (8) were established to address key areas within the NDAA.

  • We hired a lobbyist to act on behalf of the NDAA for the 2017 ND Legislative Session.

  • The Legislative Committee, with key support from the membership testimony, supported the House Bill which was signed into law on August 1, 2017, whereby the disclosure of the sales consideration statements on recorded deeds is required to be on the recorded deed at the county level.

  • The Website Committee continued to develop and refine our website @ Members can now register to pay their dues and/or classes online. A membership data base was created with a search engine to find available appraisers within our membership. Board minutes, bylaws, contacts, calendar, etc. are also available.

  • In August, your NDAA Board members participated in a Board Retreat where we developed and drafted the foundational NDAA Strategic Plan (This will be presented to our membership for adoption at the conference in Fargo, ND).

  • In September, as your President, I attended the AQB (Appraisal Qualifications Board) meeting held in Minneapolis, MN, where I provided input on the important AQB national topic of appraiser training and qualifications going forward.

  • Also in September, in Bismarck, our Education Committee hosted another CE event which included home-grown classroom instruction and an opportunity to attend a NDREAB (North Dakota Real Estate Appraisal Board) meeting.

  • In October, two of our Board Members voluntarily attended the Association of Appraiser Regulatory Officials (AARO) in Washington, DC, where they jointly met with the Senators and Representatives (or their designee) from ND & SD to express and discuss the current issues facing the appraisal industry in the Dakotas and nationally. Craig Steinley, a volunteer advisor for the NDAA, was elected as the AARO President for 2018.



  • In November, with our President Elect, Dean Rylander leading the charge, the NDAA Board unanimously signed and sent a letter to the Chairman of the Banking, House and Urban Affairs Committee in DC, expressing our concerns about the GSE (Freddie Mae and Freddie Mac) waivers being considered for adoption and requesting prevention of their adoption.

  • The Membership Committee has worked to promptly welcome new members and further refine our Associate and Honorary Memberships. Our NDAA membership has grown from nearly 100 at the start in 2016, to about 125 members to date. This membership growth has helped us keep the membership dues for 2018 unchanged and reasonable @ $95/yr.

  • With the oversight of the Finance Committee, we have sustained a solid financial position, and with voluntary donations the legislative fund continues to grow as we strive to reach our goal of $10,000!

  • The Bylaws/Policy Committee and the Marketing/Public Relations Committee continue to explore and help address concerns and opportunities within the NDAA.

As you can see, and it is quite evident to me as your President, the NDAA is alive and well! We are not just staying busy…we are making an efficient and effective difference!

I humbly appreciate the opportunity to serve all of you as your President, and I greatly cherish the diversity and dedication within the NDAA membership. We are all working for and contributing to the NDAA, each other, and the future of the appraisal industry in ND!
